Native American Bank announced that Derrick Watchman (Navajo) has been selected as its new Chairman of the Board. Kent Paul, the previous Chair, is stepping down after 22 years. “Derrick’s career in Indian Country finance is unparalleled,” said NAB President and CEO Thomas D. Ogaard. “From gaming to energy to entrepreneurship, Derrick has 40 years of personal experience that makes his perspective on trends and the needs of Tribal Nations and businesses invaluable.”
Native American Bank announced it has provided a long-term loan to support several initiatives of Midi Enterprises, LLC. Midi Enterprises is a business and economic development company working domestically and abroad. It was founded in 1990 by the Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara Nation (MHA Nation) in central North Dakota on the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation.
Native American Bank provided $3.8 million in financing for a new restaurant and event center in Woodland Park, Colo. That funding is being paired with an additional $3.1 million from Park State Bank & Trust (PSBTrust) to fund the completion of a top tier facility that includes three dining concepts led by Chef Victor Matthews of Tava House Properties.
Native American Bank celebrated the grand opening of its new branch in Quil Ceda Village in Tulalip, Wash., on the homelands of the Tulalip Tribes. The location offers an array of commercial and individual banking services for Native and non-native customers. It marks a strategic investment by the bank to increase its presence throughout the Pacific Northwest.
Native American Bank provided a $5.2 million bridge loan to Metlakatla Power & Light (MPL) to complete a project that will bring lower-cost power and better broadband to the Metlakatla Indian Community on Annette Island in southeast Alaska. “Completing the Melatkatla Intertie will bring the affordable power and robust Internet service that our community—like every community—needs to thrive,” said Metlakatla Indian Community Mayor and City Manager Albert Smith. “It supports our sovereign aims of self-sufficiency.”
Native American Bank shared details about five of its projects underway in Indian Country funded with support from NAB’s 2022 New Markets Tax Credit (NMTC) allocation award. The combined allocations, which support combined project costs of more than $150 million, focus largely on health and childcare in American Indian communities.
